mits. If you go into the Parks and Recreation office in person on Monday morning, I think you could take care of that and see which of their campsites are available.
They have ten of them, and the Volcanoes National Park has two campgrounds available on a first-come, first-served basis, if you decide to stay there.”
I filled out the paperwork, showed her my Alaska driver’s license, and gave her a deposit for the truck camper on my credit card.
“If you’d like to take a look at the camper, it’s right out in front. It’s just been cleaned and the camper door is open,” she told me, pointing through the window to a white pickup with a camper on the back. “We’ll expect you Monday, then.”
I thanked her and went out to preview this new and smaller mode of transportation and camping than I was used to.
For starters, the door to the camper opened in the rear. I climbed in and was pleasantly surprised at what I saw. It had been years since I was inside a truck camper, and they had certainly changed—for the better. In a compact and well-planned layout was just about everything we would need, and most of what I had in my Winnebago Minnie Winnie. Space was, of course, limited, but arranged conveniently. There was a small kitchen area with a diminutive sink and counter, a surprisingly sizable refrigerator, a stove and oven, even a microwave in one of the cabinets at eye level. Near the rear door was a tiny bathroom that included a handheld shower.
Across from it a dinette table with benches could be converted into a bed if needed. Over the pickup’s cab was a larger bed, and every possible corner was taken up with storage cabinets and drawers of varying sizes cleverly designed to fit the spaces.
